 how i really feel

by Padster on: Dec 18 2009

Score 63%

i feel that microsoft is EVIL. stealing ideas (sudo...), having horrible security, costing way too much, and spreading lies about Linux.
Their OS (and internet explorer) is crappy, the only thing that is good really is the games and maybe some apps.
The only reason that they are better in that is that they monopolize, spread lies, over-advetise, and cost way too much, so they have lots of money.
It is pure, unrefined EVIL.
that's my opinion.

Resistance is futile.

evil huh? how do you figure that?

stealing ideas is evil? well then I
guess like 90% of the features that exist
in de's for linux is evil then.... uhm...
come to think of the dock, the transparency....
...wobbly windows... oh yeah, I can't think
of one major feature that would have
come from the linux community??? can you?

ie is crappy? really? last time I checked
it had faster rendering than firefox? which
I figure is your ultimate browser huh?

spread lies? okey, maybe when 95 was
out and they said you could forget about
command line.... yeah, but that's in the past.

I often hear linux is refered to as "safe", well, there is no safe os.

coast too much? have too much money?
that's evil? yeah I can see that, I mean,
making a good product and getting paid
for it, if that isn't evil, what is??

rock on! it's a "free" world!

Go do a lil reading up on the history of GUI, esp. on Alan Kay... the very concept of having "windows" is stolen by M$. Moreover, X had been around since 1984.
How about tabbed browsing?
And I never knew Windowns has wobbly windows.

> ie is crappy? really? last time I checked

Are you sure about the rendering time? I don't know about all the fancy tests, but I personally used all the browsers there are out there, and IE(6,7,8) is just all the way down. Well, probably the pages that it renders faster are the pages that it wouldn't render correctly at all.
And if you want fancy tests, go try them yourself and tell me the results. Acid3 anyone?

> spread lies? okey, maybe when 95 was

Well, I know a famous one: "It's faster than any previous Windows version".
And look at how they're training BestBuy workers to tell customers that Windows is safer and does things that *nix cannot.

> I often hear linux is refered to as "safe", well, there is no safe os.
There is no safe OS, but there is safer OS. Just look at the facts. And don't tell me that *nix is more secure because it's less used. Look at 500 top supercomputers, how many uses Windows? Last time I checked there was 1. Look at how many percent of Apache used compared to IIS? Don't tell me that people hack for fame, coz hacking into a supercomputer or a webserver brings them more fame than you could imagine.
AFAIK, no malware for *nix ever get out of the labs - alive.

> cost too much? have too much money?
> that's evil? yeah I can see that, I mean,

Making a good product and get paid for it is not evil.
Making a good product and force people to use it is evil.
Making a crappy product and force people to use it is evil.
Think vendor lock-in.

afaik apple was the first to have a gui??
no, okey, got my facts wrong, anyways,
apple is the second biggest features
source for linux, again, ie the dock.

what about tabbed browsing, netcaptor was
first afaik. not firefox.

about wobbly windows :D haha, funny you
should bring that about and lecture me
about reading....

hmmm well, I don't know of anybody being
forced to use windows? do you? nobody
forces me, I just do it cause it rocks!

have you tried windows 7? it's faster
than anything else! rock solid!

nix is more secure cause it's less
used, (got that right) not because the
code is magic and is some super os.

try win7 and youre in love, guaranteed.

gotta go

BooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

I used both, Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10 Lucid Lynx with KDE 4, with beryl.... both are the best... no one is perfect... It run faster than anything else if YOU ARE USING MODERN PC

so, why don't you put your EXPENSIVE MODERNEST PC for the Losedows 7, and any cheap old PC (as old as Intel pentium III 800 MHZ) and install Lucid Lynx.... well, both are the best.... the boot time is the same....

The amount of uninformed, be it accidental or intentional, crud flying around here is astonishing. I was going to write a really long post discussing things like 3ddesktop, Xerox Alto, NeXTStep (by NeXT), and the inherent differences between compromising a UNIX system and a Windows system (I mean, seriously, Windows viruses SPREAD THEMSELVES. You usually have to put some serious effort into getting a virus onto any sort of UNIX system! And who wouldn't want to take control of an entire datacenter or server farm that's tied into the backbone? Seriously! That'd make for a MASSIVELY powerful addition to a botnet!), but then I realized that no one would actually listen, and would instead continue their bickering over what is these days really a matter of personal choice.

I mean, seriously, I haven't done anything in the past several years of college that truly REQUIRED Windows. Gaming can be accomplished on a console, or on Linux whenever the developer decides to port their game over (note that many of the big-name engines actually HAVE Linux ports). IM works fine. Web browsing works fine. Doing my computer science homework has worked fine, too. Except that one time that one professor wanted to show us how to write GUIs in MFC. I finished an effective clone of what he was doing in Qt using KDevelop before he was even halfway done, and I'd never even used Qt before. He'd been using MFC for around nine or ten years at that point.

Anyway, I've rambled my bit. I'm sure that a rational debate would be possible, but the truth is that most of the difference I see these days, when I actually step back and look at things from an outside perspective, break down as follows:

More games are programmed for Windows.
More people use Windows.
Most people have never used, or tried, anything other than Windows.
Many people who have had to use my computer when it is running Linux have found it to be quite acceptable for their needs.
Most people probably wouldn't care what operating system they were running, as long as they could watch YouTube, listen to their music, and check their e-mail.

To quote Homestar Runner...

Seriously.

you want to claim that wobbly windows and reflections are major features? i would think of package management, cron, the user management and the open source code as killer features....

ie faster than firefox? well there are a lot of benchmarks that proof that ie's rendering engine is times slower

spread lies? just google microsoft + fud and you will get a load of lies

"there is no safe os"
yeah, but linux is a lot safer because of it's intelligent user management... if it would not be safe it would not be the main os on servers.

and microsoft is evil, just one example: acpi.
they developed together with some other companies acpi which should be an open standard for power management. gates wrote in an email that he thinks its a shame that linux can use their work and because of that they implement acpi very shity, so that the hardware manufacturers have to conform to their wrong implementation. this means that all operating systems that implement the "true acpi" have to suffer from a lower akku duration http://www.threadwatch.org/node/13912

 Evilness

MS is like the new pirates of this era. I don't think they are evil. They just accomplish their objectives: make money, turn people into dependence, change their own "standards" every version they release, et cetera. And now, I may think MS is immoral for they charge you for a buggy product, with all their crappy issues

Everybody says they're light years ahead, though they are still wearing diapers versus *nix architectures. They won't ever solve the malware problem, they won't ever care about solving a lot of crappy issues in their system. Most people defending MS products don't understand that windows cannot be a model to do things.

For those who are old enough, try to remember the first time a graphical desktop appeared. It wasn't MS idea. MS-DOS was as crappy as Windows is today.

First I see this group I said "WTF? This is silly and stupid", but c'mon, we are talking about openness/freedom in this site, why not just let'em talk anything they want advocating pirates.

Someone once said "they talk about freedom of speech, but tell them to use their freedom of thought, for they may not know about it".

Greets.

however, I've used Windows 7 Ultimate (cracked) for a long time without taking out my money....... I never take out my money to buy any software. It never gives me problem... Automatic updates run very well... so far they can't detect the windows status (for safety, change the Automatic Update settings to "Notify Me but don't automatically download or install them"

And, it is running fine, with Norton Internet Security 2010 cracked, (with adjustable Trial period) and till today I can still update the Virus definitions... it is up to date till today....

Moreover, I've installed Microsoft Office 2007 for free, no trial (searched for the serial key, it is H36BT-QFYMQ-FCFC3-KYQ69-G67PT )

Then I have NCH Sound Converter, with a 20 days trial period, so I have forwarded the date, to 1 Jan 2050 and backward the date again, and see the trial period is about sixty thousand days left...

For me, everything can be "Free" if we are smart... So far, "I love Windows"

Get it?

When I first started out with linux (gnu or not) 10 years ago the thrill of open source (free) software made me despise M$ and its big corporate ambitions. I relish open source and shared code and communities.

But M$ is a company doing its job. True, it has caused the death of many innovative software companies and produces some mediocre apps, but it drives forward the development of the PC that linux tries to keep up with. If you're using open source code, enjoy it - there's not much point continually whinging about Windows.

Oh, and farizluqman, I would suggest there's a difference between free software and pirated software.

Well, true its "FREE", i hate and love windows, thats why I can laugh about Windows and still use them... I also use Linux because it is so compatibility friendly... But sometimes, I had to use Windows... Wine is not compatible enough to virtualize Windows apps, so I have installed Windows for ""FREE"" and do what I want...

Oracle Primavera, IIS Webserver, Adobe Dreamweaver (so far I test it stuck on the xterm,) However, Adobe Illustrator also works (using crossover), but takes 30 seconds to start and the same to exit. And my favorite War Craft III frozen throne automatically exits... At least Microsoft Office 2007 works with the latest Wine 1.1.33. In their website also said that Thousands of applications work well. As a general rule, simpler or older applications tend to work well, and the latest versions of complex applications or games tend to not work well yet. See the Wine Application Database for details on individual applications. If it rates your application Gold or Platinum, you're probably OK. (If it rates it Silver or Bronze, Wine isn't really ready to run the application for most users.)

ro run 2 os at the same time, I'm the
kinda guy that hates running 2 toolkits

if you haven't done so already, please
go and vote for this feature:

yeah it's a win feature, but it's good.

Personally I believe that windows has
the position it has is because it showed
up at the absolutely right time and
bought up every good idea and then
if something similar showed up, they
bought it too.

I think that if steve jobs would have
put his money in software instead of
hw the history would look a lot different.

still, gotta love windows :D

I'm reading through all of the comments here and the first thing that becomes real noticeable to me, is the fact that many of the comments are coming from people who aren't old and/or experienced enough to actually know what they're talking about. Sorry.

I've used Windows professionally for 18 years - built hundreds of computers - customized hundreds of computers - used enough professional applications to be able to claim that I'm a power user, often with 60+ hours of computer usage (no games) per week ... and as far as I'm concerned the "Windows Hatred" goes a lot deeper than just high cost and TV commercials.

MS didn't get their socks sued off literally over a hundred times because they have money or because others want to take advantage of MS. They got sued for stealing anything and everything that they could semi-legally get their hands on ... they got sued for copyright infringements, patend infringements, conspiring to monopolize the global operating system market, etc. etc. etc. As far as I'm concerned this truly is an evil corporation.

Just look at the warped gift giving ... presenting Univesities and High Schools with hundreds and thousands of Windows Computers over the past 15 years ... for the express and only purpose to undermine everything that is *NOT* an MS product whole having massive tax write-offs because of such donations. Why not just give MONEY so that the recipients can decide how its best used?

And what about the psychology behind MS products? Can you really be so naive to believe that BS about "they didn't put a gun to my head" to use Windows. Give me a break, once you use anything routinely, be it drugs, alcohol, gaming, or Windows ... it becomes a habit that is hard to get away from ... especially for computer users who know nothing else other than windows. Even though MS support has been so shitty or expensive for single users (by intent), people would rather stay with that crap than to switch ... for fear of having no support at all.

There is absolutely positively no doubt in my mind that if (I'll use Ubuntu here as an example) the Ubuntu folks spent just as much money hyping and advertising Ubuntu as MS hypes Windows, then Windows could throw themselves away. Oh, but the revolution is definitely coming. Here in Germany many government branches have already switched to linux based servers and linux based apps such as OpenOffice.

It took me a total of 3 months before I found absolutely EVERYTHING that I needed to replace my windows apps with, but utimately I did. I've been using Ubuntu profesionally for the past 7 months now and will never plan on using any overpriced, under developed, under supported MS product ever again. Windows is crap, there's just no comparison, period. Oh yeahh, Halleluja!

It's pretty silly to create such a group here. It's like I'd create a "Linux lovers" group on a windows site.

This is just flaming, nothing else. You will find more windows lovers on windows sites, I assure you.

As for me, I have used windows for years before switching to Linux, I believe most Linux users are former windows users.

Do I believe Linux is better than windows? Of course I do. I'm OK with people using windows, it's their choice.

okey, so what exactly makes kde-look
(where I'm posting) a linux site?

Last time I checked I was able to run
kde on windows just as fine, no? okey,
maybe I was dreaming.

Flaming? really? okey, linux as a core
is a lot better than windows indeed,
but is too incomplete for even
microsoft to be taken seriously.

For VS, you can TRY to replace it with monodevelop, but I haven't worked with it much. I doubt it'd be an excellent replacement, but you can certainly give it a try. Heck, there's probably a Windows build you can take a stab with...

Just following your thread on IDEs. Wondering what you think of QT Designer or KDevelop. I really don't write C++ but Eric4 is pretty useful for python.

qtdesigner/qdevelop is great... yeah,
so far anything that is cute, I like :D

but I guess the kinda app I'm looking for
is useless for 99% of ppl so I guess
I have to use visual basic on windows
thru virtualbox... ...it's fine tho, virtualbox
has "seamless mode" making the windows windows
integrate good with the linux windows ;)

 Were you bored?

Were you bored? Too much free time around Christmas? Did you think "Let's throw a big stone in the pool and see what happens?" Lol - but OK, I'll play along.

First: your gtk themes rock. They are still among the best although I thought you defected to KDE (like its general look, don't like its cluttered menus and that it keeps crashing randomly on me). And now you defect to the Evil Empire? WTF? Did they promise you cookies?

Oh well. I used Windows for about 14 years from Win2.1 to Win XP (skipped Millennium - I'm not a masochist) and I hated every day of it. It never did the things I wanted it to do. It certainly never did them the way I wanted to do them. I kept crashing on me and don't start me on reboots, cluttered registries, the hell of reinstalling (unless you uses Ghost, which is illegal a Windows-spokes person told me). And I loathed seeing the BSOD about three times a day with a helpful message that "fatal exceptions" were happening in "sectors" I didn't know existed.

I began experimenting sporadically with Linux about ten years ago, seriously about five years ago and I now use it exclusively for about 2½ years (Ubuntu).

Is it perfect? Hell, no. Is it better than Windows. Hm... at least as good and much more configurable. You can make it do things your way. And what was a virus again? I love it.

I take a lot of crap from my Windows-addicted friends. I shrug and when they phone me a few weeks later to help them because their shiny machine went poof on them, I help them to the best of my abilities and with my rapidly dwindling Windows know how. After all, you can't leave the poor icon-pushers in the cold, can you? :)

So, no, not everybody loves Windows. But I suppose there will always be people who are willing to pay the stupid tax.

hehe, yeah bored and tired of the linux
mentality here lately.

the mentality is this "anything that is
not windows is better than windows no
matter how crap it is", I mean what the
f**k is this shit? On every linux forum
I read about micro$oft or other crap, not
once have I seen windows ppl make fun of
linux that way.

It's so unprofessional it's not even fun.

I just have to start some group where
the description screams sarcasm 100 hundred
miles away and ppl start screaming bloody
murder :D this just proves my case...

..okey, there I've said it.

First windows I installed was 3.0... so
I guess you beat me damnit!

I had to use "me" tho, or millenium, it
was a blast! back in 99-00 my mom bought
a computer and wouldn't let me do anything
to it........ that's another story.

ten years with linux huh? well, I guess
my skills 10 years ago and with linux
in the state it was 10 years ago I probably
wouldn't have even gotten it installed.

we both know that ubuntu isn't linux,
heck, they even removed the "linux" from
"ubuntu linux" just because the thought
it would scare ppl away, how f**ked up
isn't that?

Thx for the kind compliments on my gtk themes btw, yeah, I used gnome before,
but I started missing too much features
so I went on a quick try on kde4, and
haven't looked back since.

I would think the accurate word here
would be "upgraded to kde" :D but that's
just my opinion.

gotta jet!

Happy new year man!

 For Microsoft to take serious?

by WinRiddance on: Dec 28 2009

Score 50%

Wow, I had to read this a few times to let it really sink in because my first reaction was ... what on earth are you talking about ???

QUOTE --> linux as a core is a lot better than windows indeed, but is too incomplete for even microsoft to be taken seriously <-- END QUOTE

First of all, for every bad piece/low quality package of Linux Software, I dare say that there are at least 10 - 20 lousy Windows counterparts. Meaning, for 25.000 Linux applications you may find 250.000 to 500.000 Windows apps, the majority which are nothing but pure crap. But more importantly, I've been finding Linux Software to be either far more complete than I'd ever hoped for - or streamlined down to the essentials which makes that particular software package much easier on the system while taking up less space at the same time.

Here are some examples for you:
RubyRipper is simply fantastic. Oh, sure, it takes a lot longer to rip a music CD into mp3, but only because it has built-in doublechecking and only because it can actually repair many problems on a music CD within 5 passes. That's all automatic and that's why it takes longer. Windows Mediaplayer sure can't do that ....

How about a truly, and I do mean truly FANTASTIC code editor - one that can do darn near anything except cook your coffee while costing you absolutely ... NOTHING? Well, have you ever tried Komodo from ActiveState? I've used some choice editors in the past 15 years or so, including commercial editors, and I've never seen an editor that can do as much as Komodo can do for free! It's the highest quality, most complete, most automated editor that I've ever seen.

I'm finding far superior quality in many Linux (Ubuntu) products because most Linux/Ubuntu developers seem to care a whole lot more about the quality that they produce. Now then, Games, in particular 3D Games taken aside, I have to say that in the past 7 months my Ubuntu System has *NEVER* crashed. Oh yeah, I've had some serious issues here and there ... but every one of them was an issue that I caused, and not the system. I've installed Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 on altogether 8 machines so far and not one person has had any problems yet.

Most of the people who experience problems with Linux are ones that won't admit it when they screwed up ... always better to blame the damn OS ... or people who are big time 3D gamers (where Windows has experienced massive problems over the years as well), and so on. For anyone who's just looking for a powerhouse of an OS without abusing the crap out of the system there's simply nothing better than Linux/Ubuntu or one of its similar flavors.

Weeeeeell shucks, that's my claim and by golly gosh durn, I'm gonna stick right to it.
Hey, happy New Year everyone!
(I won't be back 'til the new year)
