A local community centre is adopting linux in its internet cafe. As part of a presentation, I downloaded Fedora 11beta, Ubuntu 9.04 and Knoppix 6 live CDs to demonstrate.

Guess which one crashed during the demo.

Ubuntu 9.04? Do I win a price? Haha.

But I tried to install Knoppix 6 and I did not find the method to do it. Is it more easy now or it is still a challenge?

I tested Fedora Leonidas and I see it's not so bad!

I worked with Ubuntu 8.10 and I saw it's going at the same way as Windub for speed. But all my hardware was reconized - as in Debian Lenny - and I could do everything or near than.

Haha.

I know, I tested all (instead of Knoppix that I could not install)
I tested Puppy Linux. It's a very speedy Linux! But reserved for the older comps only. Because it don't need a web connection because of the poor database. It is derivate from Slackware but it use his own packages (PET). not very good.
Still in Debian.

Heh.
Debian Lenny was installed on my notebook till I noticed that "Run command" dialog opens after few seconds on 2.0 P4 proc with 1GB memory (!) when no programs running. I started to search for fast or more configurable distros and found Gentoo.
Then that laptop's display was broken by my cat }:[
I searched around my house for new comp, found old 1.3 P3/256MB computer that wasn't able to run Debian or Ubuntu. Then I remembered about Gentoo, went to Gentoo's site and downloaded relatively fresh "2008.0" release. Gentoo installed with no problems and after install, my computer worked even faster than laptop (?!)
So now I'm using Gentoo and happy with it :D
That's my little story :)

Some users say if you want to go to gentoo, you must like compilation. Is it always true today?

Well, you don't actually have to know
anything about compiling, since
the package manager handles that.

But if you are the kinda guy that thinks
ubunto installs packages too slow, then
I suggest you don't install gentoo since
with gentoo you compile your hole system.

If you are looking for a faster and more
advanced linux than ubontu I suggest
you try arch www.archlinux.org.

It is optimized for i686.

plus you get similar tools to emerge,
like yaourt, that looks up the
source code, compiles it and installs
it, with just one command.

I use arch on my lappy, cause I have
a slow-ass intel processor (I hate intel,
I really do), and don't wanna wait around
all day for it to compile every package.

I still like to have the compiling option tho.

On my main comp where I have a very
fast cpu I use gentoo, and nothing
else is gonna get even close to it.

Obunto is not the only distro there is,
tho possible, the worst.

I'm in debian and it speeds. I think it is an OS easy to install, and it is the best way for an old Ubuntu User.
Why?

Because you have tools you already know from a native Ubuntu (Synaptic, Nautilus, etc...) , the packages are the same (.deb) , but they are performed for Debian and so it speeds a lot (for a Ubuntu user, I say).

The Debian Version that I use is Debian Lenny. But you can use Squeeze (what is ever more stable than Windub XP) . You can use SID too (it's always more stable than XP ^^)! I actually test a SID on a Virtual Machine and it works properly.

The way of debian not to be lost from a Ubuntu.

--------------------------------
BUT OTHER DISTROS ARE FINE TOO!

Yeah you are absolutely right about debian
being stable, Debian has a very strong
reputation of being stable, if not "the stable".

I think it has something to do with, well
at least earlier the didn't add new stuff
before it was very very tested and considered
stable.

Not to mention the package manager debian
has, it's also great, very fast.

However I got the impression you was looking
for something a little more "cutting edge"
so I recommended those two for you.

If you are allright with debian then
stick with it, it sure is one of the better.

It have not nvidia 3d driver, have not sound driver for kaffeine...
And what about people who have not internet and use home pc?
Not in all country necessarily have all people internet.
He can use only windows, since linux have not all necessary driver!
And if have internet, exist people, how need full ip protocol (gateway,nameserver1-2...)
I must booting from my slax pendrive, for retouch the bad generated ip protocol!
No guru has mind for people who have fix ip?

this is kubuntu 9.04 and KDE 4.2.2

For justice: all debian distros have this big error with the ip protocol.
Only on rpm distros have full access to set up ip perfect!

And the question for the people, without internet connection is stay.

On /my/ pclinuxos I can download all necessary progs, from the server, for other people. But what can I do on ubuntu?
Nothing !!!

 Ubuntu hates Windows?

Just look at the noobs (users of the 'Ubuntu Operating System') whining their arses off about Windows blissfully unaware that Canonical aims for the same ideal as m$ - the great mono-cultural Ubuntu desktop. I came to linux 10 years ago and value its community and wide variety of devs working on a wide variety of apps. If I wanted the great unified desktop (choices made for me by another company) I could have stayed on Windoze. As someone else has posted: Canonical = M$ 2.0.

I have to disagree with your statement about Canonical.

First, I'm not an Ubuntu fan, but this year was so bad for Linux (moving KDE 3 to 4), that I've spent most of the time on Kubuntu. I'm a Mandriva fan, and I don't like .deb package managing at all (I've good reasons for that), but Mandriva was so weak that I've bound myself for Kubuntu.
I've tried the famous Debian Lenny itself, but although I had all the 5 DVDs downloaded, I was shocked with poorness of choice. Basically you have only 1 web browser instead of Firefox, the IceWeasel and that's all. The same thing stands for many other area.

Let's see *buntu:
1. The largest available repositories of all.
2. Ease of install/use.
3. I didn't find any instabilities of the system. It wasn't worse than any other Linux.
4. Only the masochists like to type in two lines instead pressing a button. Off course, you have to learn the basic Linux commands, but there are offered easier ways, if you don't have time to spend hours or days learning how to do the settings from command line.
5. Canonical promises, Ubuntu will be always free. I never red such statements from Microsoft.

You can hate Ubuntu, but I think it has no sense. You can always find an other Linux, and Canonical will not be angry with you. I don't understand your reasons.

After Mandriva 2008.1, Karmic Koala is the best distro I met so far.

OK, but it seems my experience with Ubu is a lot different. The times I've used the liveCD its been quite unstable (have a look at my earlier post up the page). Just had a look at packages.debian.org and immediately found 3 other browsers (4 if you include Konqueror).

I would have agreed about the problems with KDE4, but I've just built 4.4b and I'm quite enjoying it - seems stable now as well.

As regards (the ease of) pressing a button, it seems Ubu users are incapable of even installing desktop themes without having to ask for them to be packaged into .debs. I'm not saying they need to learn the dark arts (:P) of the command prompt, but simply installing themes ain't a challenge.
