back when I learned linux... irc was the prefered way of communication. I sense that alot of you ubuntu users coming over from windows know nothing of it and are using dipshit IM networks like yahoo and msn like windows users..lol. This is another reason I believe ubuntu to be a disease upon the linux and bsd community, if you create a distribution aimed at idiots, only idiots will use it.

Just thought I would add that I think its rather shameful that most of the linux talk in this channel is about this poobuntu mess. Its not innovative, its nothing original...if you can use ubuntu, you can use debian testing, and have newer apps than you would get in an ubuntu release! Might this be why ubuntu is pushing to get the debian team to let them sync up with debian testing? LOL I dont expect the debian team to accomodate them...before they were pushing for syncing with debian testing, every ubuntu release was based on debian unstable...the most buggy and unrecommended branch of debian there is... no wonder ubuntu has a few bugs eh? :P Logical thinking would mean that ubuntu releases would inherit the bugs and paperbag errors that debian unstable comes with and is well known for. This is why there is no debian unstable/sid iso provided...only stable and testing... :)

please STOP recommending debian testing to new users, this is completly nonsense, and shows that you actually know nothing about debian.

STABLE is the official recommended debian version (especially for new desktopusers and if stability and security is important for you!).

UNSTABLE is the official recommended debian version if you want cutting-edge, latest software with all the newest features AND if you are a little bit experienced, so that you are able to fix/workaround some bugs/problems that will occur.

TESTING is targeted only to developers who are preparing for the next stable release. testing is full of bugs which will NOT BE FIXED quickly as with unstable which gets updates quite frequently. testing updates for broken packages can be in a stale state for months! so TESTING IS NOT RECOMMENDED FOR ORDINARY USERS!

go and read some Debian Documentation/FAQs before you do any recommendations!

and please start your ubuntu-hate group and start flaming there.

I think you should do some reading. Since when do they even provide debian unstable isos? You have no idea what youre talking about. And Ill recommend what I like. Get bent.

From the debian website itself:

The "testing" distribution is an automatically generated distribution. It is generated from the "unstable" distribution by a set of scripts which attempt to move over packages which are reasonably likely to lack release-critical bugs. They do so in a way that ensures that dependencies of other packages in testing are always satisfiable.

This means in english that testing is expected to have LESS bugs than unstable therefore would be more reliable.

The code name for Debian's development distribution is "sid", aliased to "unstable". Most of the development work that is done in Debian, is uploaded to this distribution. This distribution will never get released; instead, packages from it will propagate into testing and then into a real release.

Please note that security updates for "unstable" distribution are not managed by the security team. Hence, "unstable" does not get security updates in a timely manner. For more information please see the Security Team's FAQ.

"sid" is subject to massive changes and in-place library updates. This can result in a very "unstable" system which contains packages that cannot be installed due to missing libraries, dependencies that cannot be fulfilled etc. Use it at your own risk!

Note they do not use the scarey USE AT YOUR OWN RISK concerning debian testing. Also notice that They do not warn that "testing" can be "very unstable". Id also take note that testing DOES get security updates far more often than unstable does. You do the math, idiot. Ouch, I think you just got verbally abused.

Yes, you are definately the one that needs to do the reading.

well, using debian for more than ten years now i have spent a lot time reading debian sites and collecting daily experience, and i understand the meaning of the words you have quoted from the debian website. there is no word about it in the whole text which says that testing is recommended in any way.

i say it again, if you want a secure and stable OS use debian STABLE.

"testing" as the name itselfs says (!!!) is for testing purposes, this is the collection of packages wich will become the next stable release.

other than with unstable where packages hit the repositories quite frequently the packages at testing are following a much more critical process and it may take a very long time before a fixed package hits the repositories.

Maybe you should have read this:

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-faq/ch-choosing.en.html

The Debian GNU/Linux FAQ
Chapter 3 - Choosing a Debian distribution.

especially have a look at:

3.1.6 You are talking about testing being broken. What do you mean by that?

or

3.1.7 Why is it that testing could be broken for months? Wont the fixes introduced in unstable flow directly down into testing?

---------

i think, if you want to contribute with bugreports, then "testing" may be the way you go. if you want to look how the next release "may look like" short time before the release than testing may be worth a look but it is very likely that you will run into problems, because (it may have less bug than unstable but) it will have bugs and they might not be ironed out very quickly.

if i care about stability and security, why should i use anything else than stable?

recommending "testing" as you do is like recommending "troubles", and this is what you do to people you "hate".

all you wrote was dumb insulting and blind quoting, how about switching your mind on, and give some useful facts or arguments on what you state.

Funny, Ive been running debian testing constantly for the past 3 years and never once experienced a problem. Unstable is another story :) Broken pkgs, crashes, and so on. In my experience, testing is the way to go. Sure stable is reliable and stable...its also full of stale, old applications that never get upgraded unless there is a security issue. Who the hell wants that? Not me. Id rather have some new versions of applications introduced more often like I get in debian testing that as I pasted before according to the debian website, are less likely to be BROKEN than in debian unstable/sid. tyvm.

Another thought, why would ubuntu be pushing for the debian team to work with them on syncing ubuntu releases with debian testing instead of debian sid as usual? Perhaps the canonical realized that debian unstable is more full of broken pkgs and so on and why would they want to inherit those bugs?

@ brrt: thought you might wanna have a look at this! Yet another ubuntu based distro (Linux Mint, which Im sure alot of you use) is switching to a debian TESTING base. Now would a team with a reputation such as Linux Mints do something that you say is so terrible? Debian testing rocks. Apparently Linux Mint think so too...along with Crunchbang linux...another former ubuntu based distribution. If I was a bit more intoxicated I much just go "Neener Neener Neener"

hmm, Linux Mint based on Debian testing - an interesting experiment, but nothing more. this still does not make me think that Debian testing is "it". imho, if you rely on latest drivers/features because you have brand new hardware, Debian unstable or your beloved Ubuntu might still be a better choice ...

according to the blogpost you have linked, linux mint is not switching the base (ubuntu) the debian based project is just some sort of experiment, and if it proves successful they will continue to maintain it.

maybe debian testing has changed in the last years, and if you are lucky, you will not run into many problems with it, but you will still not get the stability and securtiy fixes like in debian stable nor you will have the latest drivers/features as you will get with debian unstable.
so i see still no reason to use testing.

as with any distro, the perfect choice is always a matter of what you need/want. you would never use testing or unstable if you want to build a rocksolid server. if testing has really improved so much in the past years, it might be usefull somehow, but in my experience the quality of testing varies a lot, especially when its closed to release, it maybe quite good, but a short time after the stable release it's almost the same as unstable and sometimes even worse.

did i say that there are unstable images for download?

i did say that STABLE is the official recommended debian version, and yes there are iso-images to download for STABLE.

and i have said that unstable is for the more experinced users.

if you do not know how to install debian sid, you should keep your hands off from unstable anyways.

Then I guess I need to point out that you were also wrong about TESTING being for developers only, the debian.org website clearly states that UNSTABLE is the development branch, not TESTING. THe fact is, you were still wrong. Thats my problem. :) Quiet with your FUD unless its correct FUD.

"TESTING is targeted only to developers who are preparing for the next stable release."

This means the purpose of testing is to become the next stable release, AND NOT that this is the recommended debian version for all developers, i never wrote that!

btw. i am still waiting for your arguments, why you would recommend testing to users?

As far as I can tell, you all should rename this group to "UBUNTU FANBOI!" Few and far between has there been a comment about something other than ubuntu... very sad. There is this one fellow with his slackware based distro...but he has been quite unresponsive about my offer to create a gtk2 theme and background for his "simpleLinux"...which I find to be crap...slackware is not meant to be "simple" slackware is meant for users that know or WANT to learn LINUX and BSD. Slackware is the the oldest distribution of GNU/Linux still in development...debian is second oldest by a few months. I dont think Ill be offering my services to "simpleLinux" now. Sorry. (dont go mentioning yggdrasil and shit as the oldest distro..i did say OLDEST DISTRO STILL IN DEVELOPMENT) Thank you have a nice day. LOL

Never tried Ubuntu myself, but I did install debian many years back, currently I use Fedora. Personally I'm not convinced the oldest distro is therefore the best, and I manage fine with Fedora, but suggestions and ideas are welcome. Lastly, I can't see myself returning to Windows except within a VM, and even then I'm not that keen.

I agree with you. I use Ubuntu too and the n00b features just get in my way. But Debian won't work on my computer and Ubuntu's the closest thing I have to it. I really want more windows users switching over to Linux to get the lazy software developers to write binaries for Linux as well as Faildows. And since Ubuntu and LinuxMint seem to be the only distros that n00b users can use, I totally support n00b distros like those.

And once the noobs get good, they can switch to Red Hat, Slackware, or a more advanced OS.

Uh, what exactly makes ubuntu so much easier? Are you all not aware that gnome is gnome is gnome? kde is kde is kde? The ubuntu alternative install cd is an exact copy of the debian installer. Oh yeah, and once again must I remind you that debian linux DOES have a noobie point and click installer just like ubuntu? Good grief, you people really are idiots. The only thing ubuntu has that debian doesnt is the nancy boy nvidia driver installer because obviously typing sh NVIDIA* and hitting tab and enter a few times is far to hard for ubuntu users :) I guess they cant read instructions either.

I doubt n00b linux users would even open up a Terminal. You say GNOME is GNOME, but there are distros like Solaris that implement it totally wrong. Plus Ubuntu has things like empathy/pidgin and that little icon thing that makes popups in the corner pre-installed. Then there's also the software center. The list goes on. You said it yourself, Ubuntu is designed for n00bs. And as long as people get off Windows, I don't care what distro they use. Unless it's Mac, cuz that still doesn't help the situation. I like Macs but Linux is free and if everyone switches to Mac then it doesn't solve the binary problem I mentioned earlier.

You really expect people to know what a Terminal is after the way Microsoft has dumbed down the community? Apple isn't helping either but Microsoft is the main influence.

People are real quick to down Ubuntu. But it is a great steeping stone for those that are finally tired of Windows. It has a similar look and feel that they can easily get use to. I have known a bunch of people that once they became used to Ubuntu, went on to the other distros. Instead of putting them down we should be welcoming them into the Linux community and showing them the other distros and the wide range of possibilities that has been opened up to them.

Uh, it has a look and feel of GNOME by default. The same GNOME that is used by default in debian Linux and any other distro. Throw that arguement out of the window. Other *buntus have the same look and feel of xfce4, fluxbox, openbox, E17, and so on. None of those remotely look or feel like windows. You are an idiot.

I'm also an Ubuntu user.. It's true what Ubuntu is n00b friendly, but it's wrong to say what all Ubuntu users are n00bs... I've been using Slackware & Red Hat based dists before, so I'm used to do the most stuff in the terminal.

I want my OS to be something between Linux & MAC, as I like some parts of MAC.. But I still want it to be original, and not just another MAC clone...

I'm using Ubuntu because of:
1) It's the dist what is closest to how I want my OS to be.. (using it as a base will decrease the amount of work to be done.)
2) The community.

When I was a "noob" back in 95, I started with slackware. I also wasnt a lazy dope that didnt want to have to learn anything. Ubuntu mainly attracts people that dont want to learn anything. That being said, how are "noobs" supposed to "get good" ?

Actually, that sucked. That wasn't a response to what he had to say at all. He's saying Ubuntu's targeted toward people who don't want to learn anything about Linux. You're saying the developers work hard on Ubuntu. Though both those statements are true, how the hell is that a comeback to what he said?

Hi Dear my friend,
you just write, that Ubuntu-users are not willing to learn anything??
For (and just for me) this is not true. Since I am using Ubuntu, I have learned a lot (using Terminal for doing several things inside my system), using my system, and so on.
I also learned to be creative on my own system an how to create iconthemes myself (I am at the moment creating something new, that's just why I took my artwork down).
So not all users who use Ubuntu are just nOObs. This is not a fair way of treating the users of Ubuntu. Not all of us are nOObs.
