Windows vs penguin. The penguin would win because it will throw the Apple and smash the Windows into little pieces.

Forever live, Linux. You are now seen as a threat to Microsoft.

 Essay Almost done!

by Padster on: Mar 8 2010

Score 50%

here, now:
_______________________________________
Microsoft has done some pretty unfair and unethical things to keep ahead of the pack. They use aggressive advertising, bribe other companies with their wealth, spread untruths, and overtake other companies by stealing their ideas.

Microsoft has done things leading to a monopoly in computer products. Microsoft has a sizable rebate valid if Original Equipment Manufacturers put Windows on any computers, but only Windows is allowed then. OEMs want the popular Windows and agree. This is uncompetitive, and unfair to other businesses. “Embrace, extend and extinguish” is how Microsoft described their strategy to overtake competitors. Embrace: make a new product from something already widely used. Extend: add new propitiatory features. Extinguish: more people buy the new product, because of these features, and the original company goes out of business, or is impaired.

Microsoft's advertising is another topic. Advertising your own product is expected, but not using false and misleading information. Best Buy had a training program, educating the employees about how much better Windows 7 is than Linux. It said things about Linux that were flat out lies, or years out of date. Really bad support for hardware such as mp3 players, webcams, digital cameras, and printers? Support isn't as good as Windows, because of its monopoly, but most things work well. Updates in Linux are confusing and hard? No, there are really easy update tools for most Linux versions. Windows software doesn't work on Linux? Obviously, it were made for Windows, but there are FREE alternatives for almost every Windows program. There is also WINE (an acronym of “WINE Is Not an Emulator”), which runs lots of Windows software in Linux. These are examples of lies that Microsoft wants to spread about competitors. Is this fair, ethical advertising?

Standardization is a big goal (and mostly achieved) of Microsoft. Because of their software monopoly, most people are familiar with Windows software, such as Word and Excel. Some people know those terms, but not basic file types. Word processing is typing on a computer, like this essay. Some people would call this a “Word Document”. No, that means Microsoft Word. There are many alternatives to Microsoft. Cheaper office suites include WordPerfect and AbiWord. This essay was written in OpenOffice. OpenOffice is an office suite that has a spreadsheet, word processor, and presentation tool. It's free, open source (the inner workings and code are available for inspection and improvement), saved in an open format, and can also read other formats. Schools teach people about Microsoft's software, hardly exposing them to anything else to the extent that some people might not know what a word processor is, but be able to identify with “Word”.

Windows wasn't built for security and durability, either. It was started before the internet became popular, and security has been an afterthought. Unix and Linux (Unix-based) were built with security and internet protection in mind, so obviously their protection surpasses Windows'. Windows is known to have hundreds of viruses. Within a week of release, 1.5 million people downloaded Microsoft's “Security Essentials”, and a third had viruses. These can do anything from slow down your computer to take complete control over it. There are anti-virus programs, but most of those cost a good deal of money.

These unlawful practices, better alternatives such as Ubuntu Linux with free software, and the many bugs in Windows are why I don't use Windows unless I need to run certain software. If any of this information attracts you, I advise you to keep on supporting Microsoft. If not, then it's time to end the reign of terror.

i need a title, though.
maybe something sarcastic, or thought provoking.
i was think maybe "Microsoft: a Team Player?"
or "Microsoft: a Fair Player?"
or "Microsoft: What is it Really?"
or "The Truth About Microsoft"
btw, from the other version i cut off over 200 words!
any ideas or feedback?

hmm, there's getting to be lots of quotes, so i made them without spaces. is this OK? it was really long before, but now it's kind of confusing, even though there's "~"s by the start of each quote. is this better, or should i change it back. any other ideas?

 Windows?? No!! Ubuntu forever

by Karmicbastler on: Mar 13 2010

Hi together,

I also switched away from Windows a little more than two Years now. I am with Ubuntu an I love it and I will never switch back to Windows!!!!

Ubuntu is so customizable and so stable.... why using Windows further?

And as I swa, the real Windows Vista and Windows7-Feeling is also possible in Ubuntu. I am just on finishing up my original Windows-icons and then will go on to create something completely different. Something like Suse and another thing that I have just started, because I loved so many Icons I found for it.

Then I found out, that this group seems to be the biggest one here. And so many friends of mine are here in this group.

Great..... jjjjjiiiiipppeee, let's make Gates and Microsoft dy out!!!
My spirit is: Gates & Windows=Game over!!

Greetings
Karmicbastler
