Description:

A widget style for Qt4
- Pretty configurable
- More Mac than Windows - but no clone at all
- Don't ask me to port Baghira ;-)

As for what to do with GTK+ applications, have a look here:
http://arch-stuff.org/content/show.php?content=134123

It suites the default look pretty well. Set the "Default" titlebar background colors to 239/239/240 and the text to something dark/gray.

Thalics complete Bespin Guide is afaik still down, sorry :-(

hi i'm adding this post just to notice you some troubles, amarok doesn't start anymore with bespin compiled by me,here,http://pastebin.com/WRtDHXdK,is the kcrash report,i tried it with and without the "amarock hacks" enabled by ./configure,i remember that when i used bespin from ubuntu repo's amarok worked, but i'm not using ubuntu i'm on debian testing with KDE4.3.4,also(i think it's compiz port of kde-window-deco fault)that the window decoration trought compiz and kde-window-decoration with bespin style works well but disappear when maximized, and the scrolling in kmess seembs buggy,it takes lots of cpu power, after all bespin is a great QtWidget style, thanks ott0disk.

regarding amarok:
please compile bespin in debug mode (or at least not "Release" mode) as in case it's involved in the amarok crash at all, there's no debug information in the backtrace.

do not compile the amarok hacks, they can't be used anymore anyway.

also, they should meanwhile be removed, therefore i wonder which revision you're currently on (i.e. do "svn up")

regarding compiz:
well, works for me (except that kde4-window-decorator doesn't paint shadows)

i don't use kmess.
does the cpu load occur in the kmess process or in X11?

 2 issues (new and old)

2 things I just noticed.

1. (new)
after one of my last updates there is a "Plasma" menu in xbar when having no window selected or one without a menu. Is this behavior intended?

2.
when using the openoffice kde ui together with bespin it is very messed up (e. g. button backgrounds between 2 buttons and plain-colored rectangles when hovering over them). May this be solvable? Works ok with oxygen.

thanks :-)

1. yupp, the taskbar has been kicked in favour of an (xml) customizable menu - there are some demo files in the xbar <strike>folder</strike> node, but i need to provide better "first run" support :-\

2. OOo has Qt4 styling support now? (i don't use OOo at all, so aside i need to figure how they support Qt4 skinning (OOo used to have it's own UI classes, emulating gtk and later on Qt3) screenshots for previsioning would be nice ;-)
However, this is an emulated UI (maybe even wrapped through gtk-qt) so this _might_ not fix at all :-(

I do not know how this is implemented in OpenOffice (this is the result when compiling go-oo.org sources under Gentoo using the kde useflag), at least it doesn't feel very native :)

Made 2 sceenshots, one with Bespin and one with Oxygen.

http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/1241/oowriterbespin.png
http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/390/oowriteroxygen.png

(the blank rectangle around the "B" appears when hovering over the button).

Also noticed that the bottom taskbar is screwed up with Oxygen as well, so kde / Qt4 support seems to be far from perfect.

those circles look like a giant version of the splitter or dock indicators (just in wrong direction) if you compile bespin yourself, you could add an immediate return to drawDockHandle() in docks.cpp (and maybe drawToolBarHandle() in toolbars.cpp, best one by one to bisect.

if not, i'll have to install OOo :-(

drawToolBarHandle seems to fix that strange background

the button mouse over border is also kind of "moody" (sometimes there is one, sometimes not) but guess this is the fault of OpenOffice :-D.

there's also a problem with the treeview indicators, but all in all i'm quite positively surprised ;-)

(you can align the decoration color from kwin, bespin has a ruleset)

i'm gonna check what can be done on the colors, but the toolbar seems fixed

Bespin is saucersome man, congrats for it! I'm having a lil problem here: everything is running smoothly, but my Firefox titlebar has a dark green color instead of the milky default one. (dont use other GTK programs, so I dont know if its something isolated or not).

Any clues?

the bespin decoration does not use the window background color for decorations but the titlebar color (in fact, oxygen is more or less the only decoration using the window color - there was some flamewar around this ;-)

just when the window is bespin styled there's a (default) option to share the backround with the deco (per client, i.e. a dark window will have a dark deco and a bright window a bright one)

you can edit the titlebar color from "kcmshell4 colors" but recent bespin versions allow you to do this from the bespin kwin dialog (where you can also define specific looks per window, be aware that esp. firefox renames the client with nearby each version)

 XBar and QMdiArea

Just noticed a small glitch.

When I add a QMainWindow to a QMdiArea Bespin uses the menu of the newly added subwindow for the XBar. Only way to get the original program menu is to switch back to the application via Alt+Tab or similar. After that the menu from the subwindow seems to be lost.

I think the best way to solve this would be to just ignore menus from a QMainWindow within an Mdi area, is this possible?

first off: do not attempt to compile with amarok hacks, they're no more usable, supported or (hoepfully ;) required, recent svn revisions don't provide them at all.

so, "can't run" means amarok segfaults? do you get a backtrace?

in doubt try
gdb --args amarok --nofork
run
[wait, gdb says "segfault"]
bt

post or rather mail the backtrace.

"gradient 2" arises with the groupboxes, there're already several modes, pick any other one for less gloss with dark schemes ;)

"gradient 1" are actually differen gradients.
a) there're the groupboxes (former "misc" -sorry- section, now "input/system" - well... hardly better name :)
choose "none"
b) should be the UNO thing (unified tool/menu/titlebar) just disable it.

window shadows are not provided by bespin (neither style nor deco) but the window manager (kwin) and compositing
as the default plugin has flaws, go here: http://kde-look.org/content/show.php/BeShadowed?content=121607
(however you can control a window outline by setting a color role other than "window" and "none" gradient in the kwin page)

i assume for the other shadows you're more interested in some kind of indirect glow ("hidden lamp")? (as you can not see a black shadow on a black base anyway...)

thanks for quick reply ;)

now i'll be talking about stuff i really don't know about so bare with me ;) what i meant with coloring of gradients is: now it works just with adding (decreasing) gamma.. and what i wanted is to set from and to color.. so i can set gradient should be: from this black to exact shade of dark blue
this would solve some of my problems with UNO and comboboxes and groupboxes (btw still cant find groupboxes settings ;) only combos are there)

you haven't said anything about slitting lines so i guess you can't set the custom color on them

now for the other elements this is screenshot with same color scheme
bespin http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/5452/snapshot05.png
oxygen http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/5971/snapshot06.png
as you can see on oxygen the elements are clearly separated.. so i probably meant something like adding colorable outline for comboboxes and base view and maybe some others (you're currently using only line at the bottom so this is what i meant maybe not reasonable from my side as it might change the feel of bespin.. but i don't think so ;).. if oxygen wouldn't color gradients automaticly to that evil white it would probably be what i want (from the coloring point of view ;)

and lastly yea those are the shadows (indirect glow) i'm talking about :) and i use beshadowed but now because of some weird bug i can't access desktop effects :p

groupboxes are pretty much on the bottom of the "windows" page, please explain your UNO troubles a little more detailed.

about two point gradients:
that's no option - sorry.
Basically this means to defaine static colors for elements what necessarily fails as elements can have their own palettes (thus a button bg color becomes red)

So the gradient _must_ be encoded in one color and a function.
If you're after a certain gradient, no problem make a mock and if it's different (and i like it :) i'll add it .
If you just need a way to trigger a specific end color for a gradient/color combination (i.e. which color will make me that blue on the upper end of this gradient) i could write an inverse calculator for the CLI tool.

Things like "red to green" simply won't happen.

about splitters:
i can paint a drunken monky there if i want (three headed ;-)
The trick is to do a (preferably _one_) line that works with all colors... and somehow matches the style (thus the translucent black/white carve)
Please understand that a Doom3 HUD like look with eg. say neon bars is far out of scope for this style.

i'll have to think around the halo/glow stuff a bit - painting colored line frames is however not this style - it would rather end up like always being focussed (without using the focus color, oc)

i really appreciate the time you spent on clarifying the thing about coloring ;)

hmm.. ok i didn't know about how gradients work and yea that's what i wanted (red to green) which is impossible ;)
i'm no artist so i can't provide any good mockups for gradients.. which is shame because i think more of them would be welcomed in bespin ;)
the problems with UNO are no other than that unsolvable gradient coloring - so no option for this

lol that made me remember on playing monkey island :) yea i thought so that it would change the bespin style too much.. guess i'll have to wait for another style which will focus on crazy doom like interfaces :))

it's not that big deal i think because on other dark schemes i made it still looks fairly good and visible

frankly all i wanted is black interface with black to blue gradients in UNO, comboboxes and groupboxes; blue shadows, outlines and splitters; green highlight.. and all this just because i was bored and wanted to test limits of theming engines :D

anyway thanks and keep up good work :)
