Description:

Oxygen style and decoration with support for transparency (see screenshots).

This is an official branch of the KDE oxygen style. It is kept in sync with the official oxygen style, and adds support of full transparency on the windows.

The style and the decoration are named "Oxygen Transparent" and appear as such in KDE's system settings (in both the applications and workspace appearance pages).

A configuration helper application is included with the style that allows one to configure both the style and the decoration in the same window. It is called oxygen-transparent-settings.

The provided script, named oxygen-setup.pl is used to:

- get the sources (from git)
- configure them
- compile and install the window decoration and widget style.

important notes

1/ The style (and decoration) should work for recent enough versions of KDE4.

Different versions (branches) must be used depending on your KDE version:

- the KDE/4.8 version works with KDE/4.8 (tested), and possibly some earlier verions (not tested)

- the KDE/4.9 version works with KDE/4.9 (tested)

- the master version works with latest KDE, compiled from git. It may not work with any earlier KDE release.

New versions will be added (KDE/4.10, etc.) when the corresponding KDE4 version is out.

One can switch between branches by running the script and specifying the relevant branch:

Quote:
oxygen-setup.pl --branch KDE/4.8
oxygen-setup.pl --branch KDE/4.9
oxygen-setup.pl --branch master

By default (when no branch is specified), the master branch is used.

There is a number of additional options available for the setup script. To get a list of them, type:
Quote:
./oxygen-setup.pl --help

2/ Since March 4th 2011, oxygen-transparent has moved to git.

The project home page is:

https://projects.kde.org/projects/playground/artwork/oxygen-transparent

You can get the sources directly using:

Quote:
git clone git://anongit.kde.org/oxygen-transparent

3/ KDE development packages are needed for the compilation to succeed (see below)

Feedback highly appreciated either here on on IRC, #oxygen. (ping hpereira, or hugo)

Downloads

There are automatic builds linked in the download section which have been provided by others (thanks !).

Only the first download (the script) is maintained by me, it always provide the latest svn version of the code.

Needed packages for installation/compilation

(thanks to MezzeForte for providing the list):

- gcc-c++
- git
- cmake
- kdebase-workspace-dev
- libxrender-dev
- libx11-dev

- Depending on the distribution you have the name of the packages might change a bit

- there are usually more packages needed by the packages above and installed via dependency.

For instance,

Quote:
sudo apt-get install build-essential cmake kdelibs5-dev kdebase-workspace-dev libxrender-dev libx11-dev git

should work on recent enough Ubuntu (thanks to Antelmo for posting. See page5).

Bugs:

Even though oxygen-transparent is not officially part of KDE you can report bugs to https://bugs.kde.org.
You would need to select Oxygen as a product, and Style as a component.

Make sure that "Oxygen-Transparent" appears in the bug title so that it does not get confused with official oxygen bugs.

Posting bug reports at bugs.kde.org is highly recommended rather than posting comments on this page, as it makes my life much easier at bookkeeping.

Changelog:

7f0a6013:
- synchronized with latest oxygen
- created KDE/4.10 branch
- Warning: if you are using the "master" branch (which targets KDE/4.11), you will have conflicts with oxygen (@KDE) configuration, unless you are also using kde from git repositories
This is due to backward incompatible changes in the configuration code.

83a46b6c:
- attempt at fixing bug concerning window positionning on screen for multi-screen setup
- changes in version policy. New available branches are KDE/4.8, KDE/4.9, and master. KDE/4.10 branch will be added as soon as the corresponding KDE4 version is released. The "stable" branch has been removed.

731ce67e:
- synchronized with oxygen (KDE/4.9)
- fixed crash at exit for virtually all KDE applications

d7bb65f0:
- synchronized with oxygen
- use icon from icon theme for tab-close button
- updated install script to deal with master and stable branch

7a121e2:
- synchronized with oxygen
- fixed compilation issues with too old versions of KDE

Svn not found: means that well ... you need to install a svn package (kubuntu must provide one, but I don't know its name since I don't use kubuntu).

You'll probably need a number of other packages installed (which are not by default). Look at the section "Needed packages for installation/compilation"

(it mentions 'subversion', which is 'svn', in fact).

Then try again (when all is installed)
good luck!

 Apps crash after being closed

Hi Hugo and thanks for this theme! It's great!

I use KDE 4.6 Beta2, oxygen-transparent-svn rev. 1204527 and Qt 4.7.1 with Raster graphicssystem on ArchLinux 64-bit.

I get crashes after closing some programs, reproducable every time. Especially with dolphin, systemsettings, kmix and on logout/shutdown with ksmserver.

I believe you can easily reproduce by running e.g.

dolphin -graphicsystem raster

and then closing the application.

My distro does not provide debug packages so my trace is incomplete but I hope it helps:

Nothing in the crash-report connects to oxygen.
Does it also occurs with other styles ?
I would suspect an issue with Qt or with drivers.

Can't reproduce here. (with kde4.5 and Qt 4.7.1)

Hello Hugo,

I also had no problem when using KDE 4.5.
After upgrading to KDE 4.6 betas and RC1, I get these crashes.

I just tested with Bespin (latest svn and ARGB transparency on) and I can reproduce the crash when closing KMix with similar trace.

With QtCurve with transparency enabled I do not get any crash. The QtCurve kde4 package however is compiled on KDE 4.5 and Qt 4.7.1 if that matters.

I will try to get a better trace by recompiling Qt and kdelibs with Debug symbols enabled.

This happens while using raster as qt graphic system.

this can be set by QT_GRAPHICSSYSTEM to raster, or use a kcm config here: http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=129817

Hello Hugo. I have tried to get a better trace and I hope that it helps. I can reproduce it with KDE 4.6 and latest oxygen-transparent.

I believe it might be related to the Qt appmenu patch by Aurelien Gateau and the interaction with the style. Anyway:

I think this bug report in Qt is related to these crashes. Are any changes to oxygen transparent needed?

I agree this looks quite related.
That would explain why some apps crash and some not. Why would it be triggered more often by oxygen-transparent I have no idea though.

Hello Hugo (and sorry for annoying you!)

After some more testing I have discovered a bug in the kde bugtracker [1] which is strikingly similar to the trace I got above.

The reporter there uses QtCurve Style [2] and mentions that the bug is solved after QtCurve update to 1.8.4. Its changelog is:

1.8.4
-----
1. Fix saving of custom alpha values.
2. Fix crash upon exit - due to double free

I can say that QtCurve with ARGB transparency ON works fine here when oxygen-transparent presents the same crashes.

Maybe the developer of QtCurve could provide some insight?

Thank you very much for your time!

Same problem here. But it crashes with OpenGL too. Less, but it does...

Using Oxygen Transparent and OpenGL : SystemSettings and Plasma Workspace crash on exit.

Using Oxygen Transparent and Raster : SystemSettings, Plasma Workspace, Dolphin, Kmix, Amarok... crash on exit.

Using Default Oxygen and OpenGL OR Raster : nothing crashes.

No. Should not be the issue. If you've been able to compile and install, then it means you have the proper dev files.

Now for the first comment:
1/ uninstall, unfortunately you can't.

You can re-install kdebase and kdelibs (version 4.4) and that *should* erase your compiled code (but its not easy to force reinstall of packages)

You can try compile and install the native oxygen from sources (though I'm not sure it would work since the script is very similar to the one from oxygen-transparent.

You can get the script at:
http://hugo-kde.blogspot.com/2010/09/performance-issues-one-script-and-call.html, and run it with option --branch 4.5
(the script will not work with the 4.4 version, but the resulting code *should* work with kde4.4)

2/ repair: can't really say what went wrong with your install. It does work here, and does work (apparently) for many other people.
The only suspicion I have is some mismatch in the various installation area so that you get a mixture of libs/plugins from native kde4.4 oxygen and oxygen-transparent.

Did you re-compile oxygen-transparent *after* your latest update of kde/kwin and otheres ?

What I'm confused about is that
1/ your kwin would not crash
2/ the issues you seem to mention are related to the oxygen *style* (not the window decoration), which in turn, is completely independent from the window manager (kwin or compiz).

Is there any chance that you get a backtrace of the crashing applications when using kwin ?

Finally, after installing oxygen-transparent, could you double check the presence (and timestamp) of the following files:

-- Up-to-date: /usr/lib/liboxygenstyle.so.4.5.0
-- Up-to-date: /usr/lib/liboxygenstyle.so.4
-- Up-to-date: /usr/lib/liboxygenstyle.so
-- Up-to-date: /usr/lib/kde4/kwin3_oxygen.so
-- Up-to-date: /usr/share/apps/kwin/oxygenclient.desktop
-- Up-to-date: /usr/lib/kde4/kwin_oxygen_config.so
-- Up-to-date: /usr/lib/kde4/plugins/styles/oxygen.so
-- Up-to-date: /usr/share/apps/kstyle/themes/oxygen.themerc
-- Up-to-date: /usr/lib/kde4/kstyle_oxygen_config.so

Keep me posted. And sorry for the trouble (as I said in the preample above: "experimental").

I have install slackware again on my system without formating a root partition. So now if I wasnt compilling the oxygen-transparent the files should exist from previous installation. So I've checked are they exixst. And this is output which I get:

bash-4.1# ls /usr/lib/liboxygenstyle.so.4.5.0
ls: nie ma dostępu do /usr/lib/liboxygenstyle.so.4.5.0: Nie ma takiego pliku ani katalogu
bash-4.1# ls /usr/lib/liboxygenstyle.so.4
/usr/lib/liboxygenstyle.so.4
bash-4.1# ls /usr/lib/liboxygenstyle.so
/usr/lib/liboxygenstyle.so
bash-4.1# ls /usr/lib/kde4/kwin3_oxygen.so
/usr/lib/kde4/kwin3_oxygen.so
bash-4.1#
ls /usr/share/apps/kwin/oxygenclient.desktop
/usr/share/apps/kwin/oxygenclient.desktop

bash-4.1# ls /usr/lib/kde4/kwin_oxygen_config.so
/usr/lib/kde4/kwin_oxygen_config.so
bash-4.1# ls /usr/lib/kde4/plugins/styles/oxygen.so
/usr/lib/kde4/plugins/styles/oxygen.so
bash-4.1# ls /usr/share/apps/kstyle/themes/oxygen.themerc
/usr/share/apps/kstyle/themes/oxygen.themerc
bash-4.1# ls /usr/lib/kde4/kstyle_oxygen_config.so
/usr/lib/kde4/kstyle_oxygen_config.so
bash-4.1#

As you see, some file are missing.
<Nie ma takiego pliku ani katalogu>
which means
<No such file or directory>

they are missing in my installation
/usr/lib/liboxygenstyle.so.4.5.0
maybe it can help you :D

best regards

Daniel K.

 blacklist for dragging?

Hello!

Recently I came upon some problems with the drag from all empty areas setting and would like to blacklist certain app's - Just wondered if it was a possibility. Musescore was the problem app BTW.

Just checked mscore. Indeed window dragging interferes badly with the application. This is a serious bug, present fir both oxygen and oxygen-transparent.

I'd prefer fix (since it might also interfere with other applications) rather than enabling window-drag blacklisting.

For the record: mscore's now fixed, for both oxygen and oxygen-transparent.

Can't reproduce.
It seems the compiler does not understand some symbols that are supposed to be declared in some Qt headers ...

Which Qt version do you have installed ?

 This is AWESOME!

Hey hugo,

I just wanted to say that I really love this style and I hope that it becomes the default style for KDE very soon. This is much more visually appealing than the current oxygen style and really breaths "air" into the design (haha cheesy I know, but I really mean it).

Will oxygen-gtk support this transparency as well? I sure hope so!

Thanks for the support !
Unfortunately, this will not become the default for oxygen, for several reasons:
1/ for designs reasons
2/ because anyway, kwin's blur (which is needed for this style to be truely usable) is not optimized enough yet
3/ and because having to blacklist applications is not acceptable for a default kde style ...

Quite on the contrary, I plan to make it a "separate" style, and deco, named "oxygen-transparent", that would share the same config as oxygen (except for the transparency of course), and which I will keep in sync (that's easy: they share 90% of the code).

This way, distributions should be able to package the style and the deco, and users wont have to compile (at their own risk) and overwrite oxygen's defaults.

I think that's an acceptable compromise.

As for porting to oxygen-gtk, yes we plan to do so, but this is somewhat faraway along the list of things to do.
Besides, many, many, applications would need to be blacklisted too because of impossible argb support.

I hope you are not too disappointed ;)

OK, well, at least it's a work in progress. I look forward to the day when this is advanced enough to serve as a universal solution, but for now, I'm happy with my KDE 4 desktop. Thanks for all your work!
